Readiness behind Uncertainty

More than three months we lived under fear, anxiety, and uncertainty because of the pandemic called COVID-19. Most people could not go out to do their work, instead, they have to stay at home and tried to keep their health in any way. This reality is really unbalanced life condition. And after the time we had faced uncertain situations we realized that we have to step out to continue our life.

Our government planned to legalize a new normal era in the short time.

Dear fellow Toastmasters and Distinguished Guests,

How far is our readiness for the new normal stage? Before answering this question, allow me to share some information about the pandemic COVID-19 and current news about it. The topics are: What is a New Normal, Confirmed Case, Medical Research, People Readiness, and The Knowledge within our horizon.

Let start to see the slide.

What is the New Normal?

Chief of the Expert Team for the Acceleration of Covid-19 Handling, Wiku Adisasmita said: New normal is a change in behavior to continue to carry out normal activities but by adding a health protocol to prevent Covid-19 transmission. (https://www.kompas.com; 20 May 2020)

The next slide is the information about confirmed case regarding the pandemic:

Here you can see the information globally, in south East Asia and in Indonesia.

In Indonesia alone the confirmed case reaches 33.076 patients with death case 1.923 patients and the mortality rate is 5.8%. You could see more information which is updated daily on the referenced website.

Let us now move to Medical Research:

§  More than 90 vaccines are being developed against SARS-CoV-2 by research teams in companies and universities across the world. Researchers are accelerating these steps and hope to have a vaccine ready in 18 months. (https://www.nature.com; 28 April 2020)

§  A coronavirus vaccine developed in China has been proven effective in monkeys. The vaccine has been undergoing human tests in China since mid-April.( https://news.cgtn.com; 07 May 2020)

§  Europe has begun human trials for a COVID-19 vaccine in Oxford on 23 April 2020. The Oxford team will know if the COVID-19 vaccine works in the months ahead. (https://newsaf.cgtn.com; 24-Apr-2020)

§  Italian researchers have claimed that they have successfully developed a vaccine to contain Covid-19 which is likely to work on humans. Human tests are expected after this summer.( https://www.tribuneindia.com; Rome, May 7)

As you can see, until today, none of the research brought the safe covid-19 vaccine into a distributed production.

Let now see the survey result regarding people readiness:

According to Covid19.org report survey collaborate with the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore:
DKI Jakarta residents apparently still not ready to enter the New Normal era. The survey uses scores in the form of numbers 1 through 5. The details, number 1 states, danger, number 2 is not ready, number 3 is less ready, number 4 is somewhat ready, and number 5 Ready. The results showed, the score is 3.46, which is still in the category of poorly prepared. (

All the above information still leaves us in uncertain conditions. So what things benefit for us today?

WHO released standard recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 include frequent cleaning of hands using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water; covering the nose and mouth with a flexed elbow or disposable tissue when coughing and sneezing; and avoiding close contact with anyone that has a fever and cough. (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public; 29 April 2020)

This recommendation give us a nature way within the horizon of our knowledge to keep our health against the diseases.

That is the end of my slide.

Dear fellow Toastmasters and Distinguished Guests,

Covid-19 is still around us, with no medicine or a proven vaccine yet in the market, and according to the survey report, people’s knowledge about the pandemic still needs to be improved. Those facts still bring uncertainty for us.

Fortunately behind that uncertainty, there are few simple yet effective ways we can do to keep our health:

Clean your hands frequently in the right way, always use a mask when you meet other people, keep a distance from others, shear your health knowledge to people around you, and stay home as much as possible. Sweet home, safe home.
